Firm Profile — Founder R. M. Gifford
The Law Offices of Patrick E. Richardson, A Professional Corporation is one of the oldest law firms in northeast Missouri, having been established in Green City, Sullivan County, Missouri in 1939 by Robert M. ( R. M.) Gifford upon his graduation from the University of Missouri School of Law. For most of the tenure of his practice, the office was located in the Farmer’s Bank of Green City building. Mr. Gifford served in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves and thereafter remained active in the Judge Advocates General’s Office. Mr. Gifford engaged in the general practice of law in Northeast and North Central Missouri and was the prosecuting attorney of Sullivan County for many years. He was also the city attorney and mayor of Green City and served in the Missouri House of Representatives. Mr. Gifford was active in the Missouri Bar Association and served several years as chair of the Economics of the Bar Committee.
Upon his graduation from the University of Michigan School of Law in 1971, Mr. Gifford’s son, Geoffrey Gifford, joined the firm and the partnership of Gifford & Gifford was established. Geoff Gifford tried state and federal criminal cases, both as a prosecutor and as defense counsel, as well as civil cases in all courts. In 1977, he left the firm to serve as adjunct professor of law at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law. In 1978, he joined Gene Pavalon and this partnership went on to become the firm of Pavalon & Gifford, where Geoff Gifford still practices at 321 North Clark St., Suite 900 Chicago IL, 60654 in the areas of medical negligence and product liability. Glen R. Simmons
Glen R. Simmons, who grew up and attended high school in Sullivan County, joined the firm in 1975. Mr. Simmons graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1962. He also obtained a B.A. in Math from George Washington University in 1969. He was employed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Washington D.C. from 1962 through 1975. He graduated from the University of Baltimore College of Law in 1975. In 1977 the partnership of Gifford & Simmons was established. Mr. Simmons practiced at the firm until becoming the Sullivan County Associate Circuit Judge on January 1, 1979. While with the firm he engaged in general practice and the practice of patent law. He served as Sullivan County Associate Circuit Judge until his retirement in December 1998. Since that time he has been a full-time Realtor in southwest Florida.
Patrick E. Richardson
Patrick E. Richardson, who grew up and attended high school in Putnam County, Missouri, was employed as an associate at Gifford & Simmons in August 1978. Mr. Richardson received a B.S.E. in History from Truman State University in 1974 and graduated with distinction from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law in 1978. While attending law school, Mr. Richardson was a staff member of the Law Review. In 1979, the partnership of Gifford & Richardson was established. In 1983, the professional corporation of Gifford & Richardson, P.C. was formed. R.M. and Pat continued to practice out of their office located in the Farmer’s Bank building in Green City. Their practice was state-wide but primarily covered the Northeast and North Central Missouri area. Mr. Richardson’s practice consisted primarily of the trial of personal injury, criminal and domestic cases. Early in his career, Mr. Richardson established his reputation as a trial advocate by winning acquittals in several high profile criminal cases.
Establishment of current location
R.M. Gifford continued to be actively engaged in the practice of law until his death in 1993. Mr. Richardson continued to practice under the firm name of Gifford & Richardson, P.C. until January 2003, when he built a new office building in Kirksville, Missouri and the firm moved the 25 miles to its present location at 620 Rosewood Drive. At the time of the move the firm name was changed to The Law Offices of Patrick E. Richardson, A Professional Corporation. Mr. Richardson is the owner and president of the corporation. In Kirksville, Mr. Richardson has continued to concentrate his practice to the trial of personal injury, criminal and domestic cases in the Northeast and North Central Missouri area.
